Achilles or No Tiger Woods Is the Betting Favorite at the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Las Vegas, Nevada (March 21, 2012)--The betting public in Las Vegas loves to bet on the PGA Tour, and when Tiger Woods is playing, they love to bet on him. But even though Tiger is the favorite to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the public might be shying off him a little bit because of his recent "injury." According to the Las Vegas golf PGA Tour betting experts, Tiger opened at 8/1 to win followed by Phil Mickelson at 12/1.--By Brian Hurlburt, odds by Jeff Sherman.

"The public is treating Tiger with a wait and see approach this week," says Jeff Sherman, the founder of Las Vegas' GolfOdds.com. "Usually there is Tiger support on the odds to win shortly after they are released. With the Tavistock Cup acting as an evaluation opportunity, Tiger's support may waver based on how his health is perceived. With the matchup against Phil Mickelson, one can support him or go against him depending on their perception in his return from the achilles injury.":

In that individual matchup, Tiger opened -140 against Mickelson but had moved slightly to a -135 favorite. Other notables in the field were Webb Simpson and Justin Rose (15/1) and Hunter Mahan (20/1).

As always, we compared the Vegas odds with the official PGATour.com Power Rankings. Writer Jeff Bolton listed Tiger as his favorite but didn't have Mickelson listed in the top 10. Bolton wrote the following about Tiger: "A six-time champion and all-time money leader at Bay Hill with earnings of more than twice those of Vijay Singh, who ranks second. Woods currently leads the PGA TOUR in total driving and the all-around. Recovered from injured left Achilles' tendon."
